CBNC has asked: Are users of the
“adultery” website Ashley Madison at risk of blackmail? The answer is a
resounding “Yes” after hackers made good of their threat to expose the members’
database online.
With its come-on spiel “Life is
Short, Have an Affair,” Ashley Madison has enticed millions of users from all
over the world, including thousands in Saudi Arabia where adultery is
punishable by death.
“Now, nearly 10 gigabytes of data,
including member account details, logins and payment details, have been posted
to the Dark Web, according to a report in Wired,” wrote CNBC.
Being the underbelly of the
Internet, the Dark Web as the repository of the Ashley Madison members’
database is doubly threatening than if it had been posted in the open web.
“The Dark Web is the playground of
hackers and all other tech-savvy criminals. Everything’s for sale on the Dark
Web, like drugs, sex and arms,” said tech guy Kevin. “I would not be
surprised if the denizens of the Dark Web are now feasting on the data to
monetize them,” he said.
The problem with websites like
Ashley Madison that suborn members to commit illegal acts is that they do
not need to be hacked to send its users to the road to perdition.
Any employee at such member
data-collecting websites can just sell the data to scammers and blackmailers,
etc. Ashley Madison should serve as a reminder to all that – GO READ THE TITLE
