A new GPS-based app dubbed Enlighten
could soon tell drivers when a stop light is going to change color, allowing
them to either quicken pace a little or slow down to safely cross
intersections.
In a report by CNBC, automaker BMW
is said to be working with an Oregon tech start-up to “alert its drivers when
the next stoplight is about to go green or red, while suggesting the best speed
to avoid a wait.”
“A future version could even raise
an alarm if you’re about to run a red light,” it said.
The app is based on
interconnectivity with the traffic management computer system of cities, thus
its rollout hinges not only on the app working as envisioned by BMW.
Traffic light management operators
would also have to allow the app to be interconnected with their system.
At present, a more practical
solution to inform drivers when a light is about to change is the presence of
digital timers counting down when a light is about to change.
In the Philippines, it’s far
simpler. For many abusive drivers, yellow does not mean “slow down and prepare
to stop” but to “press the gas pedal to the metal in order to beat the red
light.” -End-
