Whether he said it literally or
figuratively, Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya was grossly
mistaken in saying that the heavy traffic in eastern Metro Manila would
not be “fatal” to anyone once the construction of the LRT-2 extension project
starts next month.
Literally, the heavy traffic dubbed by the
Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) as madugo or bloody could
prove fatal to the poor soul who could be trapped in gridlock while being
rushed by an ambulance to a hospital.
The traffic could also spark road rage that
could prove fatal to those who would cross paths with hotheads behind the wheel
with guns tucked on their waists.
However, since Abaya qualified that by
“fatal” he meant the traffic is “not burdensome to the daily lives of people,”
we ask:
Is it not burdensome for ordinary people to
wake up at 4 a.m. just to make it to work or school at 8 in the morning? And
it’s not burdensome to endure another three hours of rush-hour traffic commute
to come home?
Abaya never fails to amaze with his tendency
to shoot from the hip in covering up his utter failure as head of the
Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC).
Abaya should know very well that traffic
gridlocks cost the government and the people billions of pesos in lost
productivity and taxes.
Abaya is an epic fail as DOTC chief. He
should just resign.
