The
Commission on Election (Comelec) says that Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has
until December to make up his mind whether to substitute the certificate of
candidacy he filed for mayor to one in which he’d be seeking the presidency in
the 2016 elections.
That’s a
mere statement of fact coming from the Comelec, one that is applicable to all
candidates. However, for the diehard followers of Duterte, it means that hope
springs eternal that the door to Malacañang still remains open for Digong.
For a
while, it seems that the mayor was merely engaged in a "hele-hele bago
quiere" stance, but it’s all clear now that the man may not really be
interested in being president because he’s already tired and old.
Just the
same, there’s still that window left open 'til December for Duterte to convince
himself or to be convinced by his followers that he can still do much more for
this country than he can ever dream of as a mere mayor of Davao City.
Just
one caveat, though, don’t force anyone to wear a king’s robe because after the
pomp and pageantry, there’s the very tough job to be tackled of running an
unmanageable country like the Philippines.
We cannot have someone saying mid-term when all hell has broken
loose that: Why are you blaming me now, I’ve never asked to be President?
