Don’t look now, but Sen. Jun Ponce Enrile is back in the Senate after
being granted bail by no less than the Supreme Court in connection with his
alleged involvement in the pork barrel scam.
Now that he's back in harness—apparently hale and hearty and none the
worse from over a year in hospital detention in Camp Crame—Enrile recently took
to the floor and asked: Where is the Senate committee report on the Mamasapano
incident?
We all know that the report, prepared by the Committee on Public Order
led by Sen. Grace Poe, concluded that President Aquino was ultimately
responsible for Mamasapano.
Enrile is the only one among the senators to come forward and ask for
the release of the full committee report and why it has not been tackled in the
plenary.
Indeed, what has happened to that report? Why has it not been released
at all?
Speculation is that Enrile may have gathered information or details that
authorities could have withheld or kept confidential.
Hence, Enrile may have an ace or two up his sleeve. After all, he is a
former Secretary of National Defense and knows how military and the police
operate.
What's next? A number of senators
are seeking higher public office and unlikely to show any interest in reviving
the Mamasapano issue at this time. But who knows? Maybe Enrile's colleagues in
the opposition could raise the same questions on Mamasapano which, after all,
is a valid election issue.
