Communications Secretary Herminio “Sonny” Coloma defended the government over the ignominous tag received by Metro Manila as the city with the worst traffic in the world.
According to Coloma, the government will try to change this “perception” aired by a foreign group which affirmed another study that at least P2 billion is lost daily by the private and public sectors in the Philippines because of heavy traffic.
By the tone of his rebuttal, Coloma somehow floated the idea that the “perception” may not be true at all, though he did not directly challenge the finding of the group that rated traffic in most cities in the world.
The knee-jerk government reaction is to apply a PR solution to an otherwise very real problem that demands real solutions. Secretary Coloma should be reminded that perception merely mirrors prevailing conditions, in this case traffic.
If the government succeeds in its solutions like deploying the PNP-Highway Patrol Group on EDSA, then traffic would ease and the positive perception that traffic in the metro has improved would naturally follow and become very apparent to the public. There are no shortcuts here.
