Cold and insensitive

Veteran sportswriter Quinito Henson reported in today’s issue of the Philippine Star (July 6, 2015) that the family of Samboy Lim is seeking redress from a big insurance company for its agent’s depiction of the former PBA star as a “beggar”. Lim’s family took offense at the Facebook post last April 30 of one AXA Philippines agent identified by Henson in his report as Marie Quiblat. The FB post included Lim’s picture and a story about a fund-raising for the cager.

The FB post by Quiblat read as follows:  “This is what financial advisors have been telling their clients of their clients of ending up a beggar to their friends if they don’t take care of their future now especially for critical illness conditions...  if it happened to Samboy Lim, who used to be a basketball superstar, it can also happen to you… why shoulder all the bills when there is a trusted partner like AXA Philippines to secure your future for just a fraction of its cost… ask me how, ask me now.”

Lim’s family decried the use of Lim’s name “in a cheap marketing trick to get people to buy insurance” and its insinuation that Lim had been reduced to a beggar. The Lims pointed out the the fund-raiser was started by the cager’s well-meaning friends.

AXA was said to have apologized to the Lims on its FB page but the family wants it to issue a public apology, set up a P1 million program to teach its agents marketing ethics, and another P1 million to promote cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.

Doctor have said that Lim’s brain had been deprived of oxygen for 23 minutes before he was revived. They have surmised that his condition may have been far better had he been administered CPR on court or while in transit to the hospital.

This sad tale mirrors how insurance companies (medical, retirement, educational, name it)  see us  people as milking cows, to which they would say anything and everything, no matter how insensitive their pitches may be, just to get our money. And then good luck to us their customers when the time comes for us to collect on our supposed “benefits.”
